Note: these fees are some of the lowest in Northern California. Many clubs charge significantly higher registration dues.
Q. What do I need to buy for the season …..what does the club provide?
A. Players need to purchase mouth guard and cleats. T-shirts, shorts and socks can be purchased on the online store. (not part of registration fee). There will be an online store on the club website and possibly an in person rugby vendor selling gear at games.
Q. Why don’t rugby players wear padding and helmets
A. Rugby is a fast moving game. Pads and helmets slow down game play by encouraging the “Superman effect” that encourages players to take bigger chances and make bigger hits.
Instead, rugby players are trained in precision tackles which “wrap up” an opponent, rather than knock them to the ground.
Q. How long does the season run?
A. Orientation is in late November. Practice runs throughout December. Matches start in January.
Q. How often will my child have to train?
A. One day to three days per week. Usually at Calabazas Park in Cupertino. Games are always typically in one location on a Saturday.
Q. Is there a lot of travel to away games?
A. No. Nearly all games are played locally from 10AM–4PM on Saturdays, usually at Leland HS or Boynton HS.
Q. I’ve heard that rugby caters for all size and shapes…is this true?
A. Yes. In fact, there are also weight-restricted age groups for U-10, U-12 and U-14. Smaller children can play against kids their own size. In our league, we do not allow bigger kids to play against smaller kids unless agreed upon by competing teams.
Q. What type of tournaments will there be?
A. NorCal Championship, first ever State Youth Championship (Fresno/Tulare), 7’s tournaments. We also run our own domestic championship in age age and weight groups.
Q. What type of training do coaches get?
A. All head coaches are certified through Rugby NorCal and in addition at least 12 coaches successfully completed the Positive Coaching Alliance certificate in 2015.
